TC Energy will initiate pre-construction activities at its Saddlebrook Solar Project near Aldersyde, Alberta that is predicted to generate 81 MW of energy, enough to power 20,000 homes a year.
The firm is investing $146 million to develop this project. The initial construction includes the installation of solar panels on TC Energy property, located in the local industrial park.
“This is the first utility-scale solar project to be fully developed and delivered by TC Energy in our history,” said Corey Hessen, TC Energy Executive Vice-President and President, Power & Energy Solutions. “This investment bolsters our ability to deliver low-carbon solutions for our customers and underscores our commitment to add renewable energy to the local electricity grid.”
The Emissions Reduction Alberta is supporting this project with a $10 million funding. The project will help reduce GHG emissions in Alberta when combined with a flow battery energy storage system.
TC Energy has the necessary regulatory approvals and permits for the project. The construction of the Saddlebrook Solar Project is expected to complete in 2023.
Meanwhile, TC Energy will continue to invest in high-quality projects to meet the requirements of the province for low-carbon, reliable, and affordable energy. It has acquired over 400 MW of renewable power through power purchase agreements in the last 24 months in Alberta. It is also planning to develop a 60-ton-per-day hydrogen production hub near Crossfield.
