Gibson Energy Signs 15-Year PPA with 26 MW Buffalo Atlee Wind Projects in Alberta
Gibson Energy has entered into a 15-year renewable power purchase agreement with Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and Sawridge First Nation to buy power and environmental attributes from their 26 MW Buffalo Atlee Phases 2 and 4 wind projects in Jenner, Alberta.
"We're proud to partner with Capstone and Sawridge First Nation as we look to advance our low-carbon transition commitment and play a collaborative role in the expansion of renewable energy in Alberta," said Steven Spaulding, President and CEO. "I'm proud of the work our teams put forward to ensure we do our part to positively impact the communities in the surrounding area and support the increasing demand for reliable, clean energy and, ultimately, decarbonize the power grid."
The projects are expected to meet over 50% of Gibson's annual electricity requirements by offsetting about 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the term of the agreement. The process will help Gibson to reduce Scope 2 emissions by 50% by 2025 and remove its Scope 2 footprint by 2030.
Capstone and Sawridge First Nation have an equity interest in the projects. The under-construction projects will contribute about $14.8 million to the local economy, create more than 90 jobs, and provide approximately 70 person-years of employment throughout their operational life.
