Twelve Begins Construction on Facility to Produce E-Jet Fuel From Carbon Dioxide
Twelve, the carbon transformation company, began construction on its commercial-scale E-Jet fuel production facility in Moses Lake, Washington. The facility is scheduled to be operational in 2024 and will produce approximately 40,000 gallons of fuel per year. Twelve plans on increasing this production capacity in the near future. The facility will also bring permanent clean energy jobs to Moses Lake and the surrounding area.
“We’re proud to welcome Twelve to Washing State,” said Washington Governor Jay Inslee. “By producing E-Jet fuel at scale, Twelve will boost our soaring aviation industry and our thriving clean energy economy.”
In partnership with Emerging Fuels Technology, Twelve produces E-Jet fuel, a power-to-liquid sustainable aviation fluid (SAF), using their carbon transformation technology. This technology uses renewable energy and water to transform CO₂ into chemicals, materials, and fuels conventionally made with fossil fuels. E-Jet fuel has up to 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions than petroleum-based jet fuels, meets all applicable ASTM International standards, and is compatible with the existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.
“Twelve uses carbon transformation to address hard-to-abate emissions across a variety of industries and to enable a world made from air, not oil,” said Twelve Co-Founder and CEO, Nicholas Flanders. “Our commercial-scale production of E-Jet fuel will allow the aviation sector to achieve fossil-free flights for the long haul.”
Under existing agreements, Alaska Airlines, Microsoft, and Shopify will be the first customers to receive products from the facility. Twelve also formed a three-party agreement with Alaska Airlines and Microsoft for their E-Jet fuel to be used in regular airline operations, helping achieve the company’s commitment to decarbonization.
“We know that maturing the SAF market is a critical part of reaching our own and our industry’s long-term goal of net zero carbon emissions," said Ann Ardizzone, Vice President of Alaska Airlines Strategic Sourcing and Supply Chain. “Our partnership with Twelve and Microsoft to bring E-Jet fuel into use on commercial flights in the year ahead is an important part of this journey.”
