United Salt Hockley, which is part of United Salt Corporation, has signed a contract with TXU Energy for approximately 25 million kWh of certified renewable wind and solar resources to cover its energy usage at its salt mine in Hockley, Texas, and its corporate headquarters in Houston.
The supplied certified clean energy will be equivalent to a reduction of approximately 10,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
TXU Energy’s Senior Vice President of Business Markets, Gabe Castro said, “We applaud United Salt for being trail-blazers in the salt production industry and taking this important step on behalf of the environment and their fellow Texans. We have no doubt this deal will be a building block for continued growth and success in both their sustainability initiatives and their overall business.”
“When companies the size of United Salt transition to clean energy, it has a huge impact on not just the environment but the confidence the public has in the entire industry,” added John Bick, Chief Commercial Officer of Priority Power. “We are excited to continue to advise on sustainability solutions, because we know the positive ripple effects they have from both the corporate and ESG perspective.”
Priority Power Management advised and represented United Salt Hockley on the contract.
The Hockley Dome Salt Mine was first discovered in the early 20th century and was originally operated as a gypsum mine. The salt mined is used for agricultural, food, deicing, industrial and water softening purposes.
Texas is the nation's largest wind energy producing state, by far, with more than 150 wind farms generating close to 30 GW at capacity. It also ranks among the top three in installed solar capacity at close to 9.3 GW.
