Venture Global Starts up LNG Production at Plaquemines Liquefaction Terminal on Louisiana Gulf Coast
The export velocity of American natural gas produced from shale plays rose a little more with Venture Global starting up production at its liquified natural gas terminal in Louisiana.
The Plaquemines LNG facility in Port Sulphur along the Gulf Coast is Venture’s second LNG facility. Plaquemines achieved a nameplate capacity of 20 metric tons per year (MTPA) within 30 months of the final investment decision by Venture.
"Between current and planned facilities, Venture Global is prepared to invest $50 billion in energy projects based in the United States which will create jobs, support local economies, strengthen the balance of trade and unleash much needed US LNG supply to our allies," said Venture Global CEO & Co-Founder, Mike Sabel, in a statement.
The U.S. last year reached a record in LNG exports with 13.6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas chilled to liquify and ship to other nations. The shale gas revolution driven by hydraulic fracturing has elevated the U.S. into the world’s largest LNG exporter for the time being.
Plaquemines will produce and export LNG while construction and commissioning is under process for the project's remaining 36 trains and associated facilities.
Natural gas is liquified by chilling it below 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 Celsius) to store it safely for shipping. Once delivered to onshore markets, it is then regasified and utilized for commercial or industrial purposes.
Asia is one of the world’s largest importers for global LNG. The shale gas revolution in the U.S. has elevated this country to the top of the global export nations, according to multiple reports.
Natural gas (methane) is a fossil fuel but as a power generation resource it emits only half of the CO2 that coal-fired plants do. Many view it as a bridge fuel from a fossil-based electricity system to decarbonized power generation.
Venture Global’s previous Louisiana LNG production is contracted under use agreements globally, including a LNG supply and regasification deal in the United Kingdom with Grain LNG.
