Renewable energy company RWE has announced its investment decision to build a 50+ MW/400+ MWh Limondale battery energy storage system (BESS) near Balranald in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

RWE’s eight-hour lithium-ion BESS was the only successful project in New South Wales’ first Long Duration Storage Long-Term Energy Service Agreements tender process and was awarded a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement.

The project, which will be located next to RWE’s 249 MWac Limondale Solar Farm and grid-connected using existing infrastructure, will support the energy transition by storing excess renewable energy and feeding it into the NSW grid when required.

While Tesla was selected as the BESS supplier, Beon Energy Solutions will be the delivery partner for the Balance of Plant, which includes the civil, structural, electrical, and control works required to connect the Megapack to the existing 33 kV substation.

Construction is projected to start in Q2 2024, and commissioning is planned for late 2025.

As part of its Growing Green strategy, RWE aims to develop up to 3 GW of renewable energy projects in Australia and expand its battery storage capacity to 6 GW worldwide by 2030.
