Hackensack Meridian Health to Introduce 50,000 Solar Panels and Battery Energy Storage for Sustainable Healthcare Operations
Bernhard, a privately-owned infrastructure firm, has announced a 30-year Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) partnership with Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH), one of New Jersey's largest health networks, for a solar and battery energy storage system that includes 50,000 solar panels.
This partnership will directly benefit HMH's global network, which includes 18 hospitals across eight countries with nearly 4,000 licensed beds and a workforce of approximately 35,000 employees and 6,500 physicians.
The agreement incorporates $134 million in infrastructure improvements, a 10% reduction in carbon emissions, a 25% decrease in purchased electricity, and a 33% guaranteed energy savings.
"Bernhard will utilize its expertise to deliver a turnkey Energy-as-a-Service solution that will not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute significantly to environmental sustainability," said Bernhard CEO Ed Tinsley.
This 30-year collaborative effort between Bernhard and MHM will advance the company's sustainable innovation and become a significant driver of economic growth throughout its operations. The initiative is also set to focus on job creation by engaging construction and trade crews responsible for implementing energy-efficient solutions.
The partnership intends to promote sustainable practices, operational efficiency, and the advancement of healthcare infrastructure. While aiming for a greener and more resilient future in the healthcare sector, the initiative highlights the potential of long-term collaborations to positively impact business operations and the environment.
"This partnership puts Hackensack Meridian Health on course to meet critical sustainability and energy resilience goals – complementing the State's initiatives to invest in renewable energy and reduce our carbon footprint," said Governor Phil Murphy. "I commend both Hackensack Meridian Health and Bernhard for embarking on this important partnership to bolster the energy infrastructure of New Jersey's healthcare industry, ensuring hospitals are prepared to continue delivering quality care."
