POM Wonderful, perhaps America’s largest producer of fresh pomegranates and pomegranate juice, has established a solar farm at its Del Rey processing plant in California.
The solar farm is spread across nearly 40 acres of land and comprises approximately 20,561 panels capable of generating 17.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. It is expected to cover over 90% of the plant’s electricity requirements by 2023. It will be operational this month.
Additionally, the firm has transitioned to using 100% recycled plastic (rPET) bottles since last month. All its 16 oz. bottles of POM Wonderful juices come bottled in 100% rPET and carry the “100% Recycled Plastic” logo.
The move is in line with the firm’s strategy to reduce single-use plastic. Each year, the firm transitions over 11 million bottles to 100% rPET.
The initiatives are part of the firm’s sustainability road map, aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.
“As an agricultural company at heart, we know that sustainability is critical to our future, POM Wonderful President Derrick Miller said. "That’s why it’s important that we make environmental sustainability a core principle of our work, and conserve natural resources to minimize our company’s impact on the environment.”
The firm has invested over $1.3 billion in environmental sustainability initiatives to date. The Wonderful Company is a member of the RE 100 global initiative. It already has solar installations at its pistachio, almond, and mandarin facilities, and JUSTIN Vineyards.
