The tri-state bus and rail transit system Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has contracted New Flyer America to deliver up to 500 hybrid and battery-electric buses over the coming years.

The initial order is for 75 Xcelsior hybrid-electric 40-foot transit buses and 25 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 35-foot battery-electric buses. Eventually, the metro transit may contract up to 400 more buses.

Metro provides Metrorail and Metrobus transit services for more than six million people across the National Capital Region including portions of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The authority operates a fleet of 1,500 buses and provides services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This new contract for the latest bus technology embraces healthy contracting measures and is paving the way for long-term benefits for both Metro and New Flyer,” said Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach, NFI. “By striking a balance between bonding and payment schedules, it offers flexibility in pricing and delivery timelines to mitigate potential supply chain disruptions or other challenges.”

New Flyer America is a subsidiary of NFI Group and has delivered electric vehicles in close to 150 cities. Among its customer include Atlanta’s Metropolitian Rapid Transit Authority, which purchased 45 battery-electric buses and 135 compressed natural gas buses in 2023.

Other transit agencies which have acquired New Flyer and NFI zero or low-emission vehicles include San Mateo and Santa Barbara Metros in California; Central Ohio, New Jersey, Denver and Winnipeg, Canada.
