Fewer Diesels in Dixie County: Florida School District Driving 23 New Electric Buses

Dixie County Public Schools has deployed 23 new electric buses to its fleet.

The e-mobility project is funded by a $9 million rebate from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program, to improve air quality and reduce emissions in the district. The district will phase out diesel buses for daily routes with the deployment of the full electric fleet.

DCPS partnered with Thomas Built Buses, Matthews Buses and Highland Electric Fleets to implement the project. The district has acquired 23 electric buses to replace a portion of its existing fleet of 37 diesel buses.

"This collaboration with DCPS highlights the district's proactive approach to prioritizing student health through innovative transportation solutions," said Duncan McIntyre, CEO of Highland Electric Fleets, in a statement. "We commend their commitment to this initiative and look forward to our continued partnership in delivering clean, reliable transportation for students."

The district's electric buses will collectively travel 270,000 miles annually and avoid 228 metric tons of CO2 emissions. They will also improve air quality for students and the community, with reduced fuel and maintenance costs and generate significant savings.
