ABTC Named Lithium-Ion Battery Recycler for FedEx-Sponsored Mail-In eWaste Program
American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) has been named as the lithium-ion battery recycler for Pyxera Global and Terra’s “Done with It” program. The program, sponsored by FedEx, will test the viability of recovering used electronics and developing circular business models for the logistics industry.
"Consumer electronics are notoriously difficult to efficiently collect, aggregate, and recycle," stated Ross Polk, American Battery Technology Company's Director of Business Development. "By removing barriers around cost and collection for consumers, ABTC aims to increase the amount of batteries entering the closed-loop supply chain in the United States."
The “Done with It” mail-in recycling program will facilitate the nationwide collection of laptops and tablets, which will deliver the donated devices to FedEx’s Tennessee facility. Once received, every device will have its internal memory wiped or physically destroyed to protect donor privacy.
U.S. residents wishing to participate in the program can request a free FedEx shipping label and donation instructions through the “Done with It” website. The pilot program will accept donated devices through December 2023.
If a donated device is repairable, it will be sent to Electronics Recycling Solutions, a Nashville social enterprise dedicated to training adults with developmental disabilities in high-demand repair jobs.
If a device cannot be fixed, its parts will be harvested for recycling. Specifically, the batteries will be sent to ABTC’s commercial-scale, lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Nevada, which will recover the materials necessary for creating a domestic battery metals supply chain that can support the electric vehicle industry.
