Mercedes-Benz has announced the opening of its high-power charging stations in the Fall of 2023 to create more than 2,000 Charging Hubs with over 10,000 charging points by the end of 2030.
While the first Charging Hubs will operate in Atlanta (U.S.), Chengdu (China), and Mannheim (Germany) beginning in October, the company plans to expand its global charging network to over 2,000 high-power charging points by the end of 2024.
"Our goal is to create an infrastructure that offers electric vehicles reliable and easy charging options,” said Franz Reiner, CEO Mercedes-Benz Mobility. “With the Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging Network, we are expanding global charging options and setting new standards in electric vehicle charging, and we want to encourage our customers to switch to zero-emission vehicles and thus make a positive contribution to protecting our environment."
The charging stations will offer a charging rate of up to 400 kW through the respective standard charging systems CCS1, CCS2, NACS, and GB/T, considering the region. Each vehicle can be charged at its maximum power rating, reducing the charging time for customers to an absolute minimum due to proper charging management.
The charging stations are located at main traffic areas and select Mercedes-Benz dealerships, and the stations will offer various amenities like refreshments, snacks, and restroom facilities.
The company plans to fix surveillance cameras at the charging stations and canopies at selected Charging Hubs for safety and weather protection, respectively. Intelligent light poles at selected locations will not only offer appropriate lighting but also functional LED elements to provide information on the availability of the charging point and the charging status of the vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz customers can reserve a charging point through the Mercedes-Benz me Charge service to reduce waiting times. The Mercedes-Benz charging network, open to drivers of all brands, will complement more than 1.3 million worldwide charging points to which users already have access.
The charging stations will be integrated directly into route planning with the help of Mercedes-Benz's Navigation with Electric Intelligence. The stations will also offer additional convenience features like Plug & Charge to help Mercedes-Benz customers automate the charging and payment process as soon as the charging cable is plugged in.
The charging network utilizes 100% renewable electricity, and several Charging Hubs will be equipped with solar panels to provide themselves with electricity.
