The New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded a contract to transit bus maker Nova Bus to provide five LFSe+ battery electric buses.
The first delivery of the 40-foot, long-range buses is expected in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The LFSe+ is equipped with an electric drive motor with BAE Systems’ next-generation power electronics. The maintenance costs of this bus is less and it eliminates GHG emissions.
This purchase of five buses in in line with the MTA’s aim to transition its entire fleet of 5,800 buses to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. The order will integrate a new bus model to its fleet. All bus procurement will have to be zero-emissions by 2029.
“We are delighted that our LFSe+ will be joining the growing MTA fleet of electric buses,” said Martin Larose, President of Nova Bus. “The MTA is a long-standing partner of Nova Bus and we are thrilled to be part of its transition to electromobility, as well as humbled to be supporting its goal of reaching a zero-emission fleet by 2040. We are excited about the future and looking forward to every community benefiting from cleaner air thanks to zero-emission buses in New York.”

In 2019, close to half of MTA's bus fleet was diesel fueled, with the rest as diesel-hybrid or natural gas. The authority began a pilot program testing electric buses with the goal of being a zero-emissions fleet by 2040.
The pilot began with five Proterra E2 and five New Flyer XE40 Xcelsior models. The 2019 budget goal was for MTA to invest $1.1 billion in electric buses, allowing it to acquire about 500 through 2024.
