The largest grocery retailer in the U.S. is installing electric vehicle fast charging stations at 16 of its locations nationwide this year.

Kroger Co. is collaborating with EV charging network firm Volta Inc. to bring the latter’s DC (direct current) Fast and Level 2 charging stations. The initial installment of EV charging will be at 16 Kroger stores in the Atlanta and Indianapolis markets.

Those will later expand into Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, KY, Nashville, Michigan and Southern California throughout the year, the companies said. Each of the stations will include a large-format digital screen offering news and advertising.

“Volta continues to accelerate the switch to electric transportation by making charging as convenient, accessible, and affordable as possible. At the same time, we are unlocking new economic opportunities for brands and retailers — proving businesses can thrive while building a sustainable future that benefits us all," said Brandt Hastings, Chief Commercial Officer at Volta. “We look forward to working with Kroger to create new customer experiences and bring critical EV infrastructure to communities nationwide.”

The collaboration enables Kroger to tap into Volta high-impact media inventory for its own advertising clients, expanding the power of the grocer’s retail media network and simultaneously driving measurable business results and environmental impact.

Overall, Kroger operates more than 2,700 grocery retail stores under various banners and divisions in 35 states and the District of Columbia.

In February, Volta announced it was expanding its EV charging collaboration with Walgreens. The goal is to install 1,000 DC fast charging stalls at 500 stores in the U.S.

The deal expands on Volta’s three years of work with the pharmacy retailer.
