Sweden’s national rail operator SJ has awarded a contract worth €650 million to Alstom for its 25 Zefiro Express electric high-speed trains. It will have the option for an additional 15 trains.
The Zefiro Express is part of Alstom’s Avelia high-speed train range. It has been designed to operate in harsh weather conditions and reach maximum speeds of 250km/h.
The estimated delivery for the first train is 2026. Equipped with cutting-edge technology , premium seating and lighting and ramp-free carriages, the trains will offer a safe and comfortable journey to passengers. It has an ergonomic design and capacity for 363 passengers.
The width of the carriages, electrical systems and signalling system have been developed to ensure compatibility with train systems in Sweden and Denmark as the trains will run there. The trains will also be certified for traffic in Norway.
Alstom Nordics Managing Director Rob Whyte said, “This is a historic agreement that will change the way passengers travel across the country. With concerns about climate change, high-speed rail is the primary alternative to air travel. It’s comfortable, convenient, and now very fast. This is a trend we see everywhere.”
