New Jersey & Canadian transits order 173 Electric Buses from NFI Group

Feb. 8, 2022

Subsidiaries of electric mass mobility solutions firm NFI Group have received orders from New Jersey Transit Corporation and Mississauga Transit for electric buses.

Subsidiary New Flyer of America has received an order of eight zero-emission, next generation Xcelsior CHARGE NG forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses from NJ TRANSIT. It includes an option to purchase up to 75 more battery-electric buses under the 5-year contract.

Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, said, “With nearly 2,300 transit buses and motor coaches delivered since 2001, NJ TRANSIT has relied on NFI’s advanced technology for decades. Today, we are powering its transition to clean, battery-electric mobility. Our lighter, longer range, and fully accessible Xcelsior CHARGE NG is our most advanced EV available, and will immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately, we are advancing NJ TRANSIT’s clean energy goals while delivering sustainable, quieter mobility in the greater New Jersey community.”

The Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric buses deliver up to 525 kWh of power. The buses feature a new lightweight electric traction drive system, which provides up to 90% of energy recovery.

Meanwhile, New Flyer Industries Canada ULC received an order of 127 Xcelsior® forty-foot hybrid-electric buses and 38 Xcelsior sixty-foot hybrid-electric buses under a two-year contract with Mississauga Transit (MiWay).

The hybrid-electric Xcelsior® buses, with BAE Systems next-generation Modular Accessory Power System (MAPS) technology, will ensure greater fleet efficiency, reliability and sustainability. The buses have a multi-functional and modular design and come equipped with geofencing technology.

This order will enable Mississauga Transit achieve its 40-year Strategic Plan to develop a transit-oriented city while reducing emissions.

Stoddart added, “NFI has been leading hybrid-electric innovation for over 20 years, supplying more hybrid-electric buses across North America – in more configurations – than any other manufacturer. Our partnership with MiWay spans 45 years, having delivered 550 buses since 1976. Today, we continue to support MiWay in its transition to cleaner transportation by leveraging hybrid-electric mobility that will immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the greater Mississauga community.”

The hybrid buses reduce NOx emissions by up to 50% and particulate matter levels by up to 100%. These buses also reduce fuel usage and maintenance costs.
