Cargo Trucker J.B. Hunt Installs Solar Farm near Arkansas HQ

The J.B. Hunt Solar facility will produce approximately 9.3 million kWh annually and use net metering to transfer surplus power onto the power grid.

Logistics and supply chain transportation provider J.B. Hunt Transport Services is putting its name and connection to a 40-acre solar facility recently completed in nearby Gentry, Arkansas.

The J.B. Hunt Solar Facility will generate enough electricity to offset up to 80% of the power used by its three corporate campus buildings in Lowell less than 20 miles away. It includes nearly 18,000 solar panels and 10,000-plus bi-facial solar modules to capture sunlight, which is then converted to electricity and transmitted to a nearby electric grid for Carroll County Electric.

The facility will produce approximately 9.3 million kWh annually and use net metering to transfer surplus power onto the power grid.

“The annual amount of clean energy generated by the J.B. Hunt Solar Facility will be equivalent to that used by nearly 1,200 homes,” said Greer Woodruff, executive vice president of safety, sustainability and maintenance at J.B. Hunt, in a statement. “And, by drawing power from the sun and not a carbon-based source, the carbon dioxide kept from entering the atmosphere will be equivalent to eliminating 1,400 passenger vehicles from the road each year.”

Construction of the facility started in 2024 with the project managed by NextEra Energy and completed by solar development and construction firm Verogy. Trio (formerly Edison Energy) and Carroll Electric Cooperative Corporation provided ongoing consultation throughout planning and development.

J.B. Hunt Transport Service has announced a decarbonization goal of reducing emission intensity goal 32% (from a 2019 baseline) by 2034. Two years ago, the company surpassed the halfway mark of that goal.

The company is listed among the Fortune 500 list of the nation’s biggest corporations. Earlier in January, J.B. Hunt Transport Services reported full revenue of $12 billion for all of 2024.

In September, the trucking firm added 20 Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles to its West Coast fleet.  Around the same time, J.B. Hunt signed to participate in a demonstration program utilizing trucks equipped with the new Cummins X15N engines and able to run on renewable natural gas.
